Here it is! If you've ever wondered what happens before, during, and after a smart meter installation, watch the below video of Johnny Vegas getting one himself. Spoiler alert - it's more straightforward than you thought.

What happens during a smart meter installation?

  1. How to book your installation

Your first step is to contact your energy supplier. You can do that by simply typing your supplier into the search box below. We’ll then take you to the right place and you can start the process there. They’ll usually ask you to log in with your account details so make sure you have those handy.

  1. During the installation

Your installer will show up around the approved time with identification to verify themselves. When this happens, you or someone aged 18 or over will need to be home, so factor this in when agreeing on a time with your supplier. At this point, your energy company should have let you know what to expect. But here are a few handy tips:

Clear space around your existing meters

The easier you make it for the installer to access your old meters, the faster the installation should be, so help them help you!

Prepare for a temporary power cut

You could lose power during the installation. Typically this is 30 minutes per meter. Your installer will try to keep this to as short a time as possible.

    Don’t miss your appointment!

Smart meter installers group appointments by location so they don’t have to travel long distances between installations, reducing the carbon emissions given off when they travel.

Try not to cancel your smart meter appointment so installers don’t have to make extra trips to your area.

  2. After your installation

As part of the installation, you should receive an in-home display. It's a portable display screen that can be put anywhere in your home. You don’t have to have one, but it’s the easiest way to see what energy you’re using and what it’s costing you. This is provided at no extra cost. Your installer will also show you how to use your in-home display before they leave.

You can find out more about the in-home display here.
